ESB Feis Ceoil - 5,000 young Irish people who know how to play

If you are an aspiring young classical musician, then chances are you’ll be playing in competition in the RDS at ESB Feis Ceoil 2015.

There’ll be much to play for at the ESB Feis Ceoil this year. Thousands of young classical musicians will play on your heartstrings, play to the gallery, some might play second fiddle, and if they play their cards right, they could take home one of the coveted prizes.

“Competitors will travel from the 32 counties of Ireland to compete in over 180 individual music competitions over 11 days at this beloved annual festival,” said Laura Gilsenan, CEO of ESB Feis Ceoil, which takes place at the RDS, Dublin.

Since it began in 1896, over half a million musicians have competed in Ireland’s premier classical music competition.  Past competitors include James Joyce and Count John McCormack and more recently, pianist John O’Conor, Tara Erraught, Claudia Boyle, Cara O’Sullivan, Celine Byrne and comedian Risteard Cooper.

The Feis could not take place each year without the valuable support of ESB, who bring so much to the event. “Irelands biggest classical music festival is an important date on the cultural calendar,” said Jerry O’Sullivan, Deputy Chief Executive, ESB.

“We are very proud to continue our support for Feis Ceoil, in their delivery of such an important platform for the development of Ireland’s most talented young musicians.  We are also delighted to present the ESB Choir of the Year competition, and we wish all of the competitors every success with their musical careers,” he added.

Last year an Orchestral Conducting Competition in association with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra was introduced, providing a much-valued performance platform for aspiring Irish conductors.  This competition continues in 2015, with finalists being given the opportunity to conduct the RTE Concert Orchestra in Studio One at RTE. The winner goes on to conduct a lunchtime concert with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra in the National Concert Hall in the summer, as well as receiving a trophy and a €500 bursary presented by Séamus Crimmins to enable the winner to undertake further studies.

Competition Dates: Monday, March 16th - Friday, March 27th 2015

Gala Concert: 7.30pm, Sunday, March 29th 2015
