ESB Networks enhances capacity at Drumline 110 kV Station to support growth in the Shannon area

  • Strategic upgrade at Drumline 110 kV Station has seen installed transformer capacity doubled at the station, supporting residential, commercial and industrial growth in the Shannon area.
  • The completed upgrade has delivered an additional 10 MVA of installed transformer capacity, broadly equivalent to the capacity needed to support approximately 2,500 homes.

ESB Networks has completed a significant upgrade at Drumline 110 kV Station near Shannon, doubling installed transformer capacity and strengthening the electricity network to support growing residential, commercial and industrial demand across the Shannon town area.

Located just off the M18 near Shannon, Co Clare, the project involved uprating two existing 5 MVA transformers to two 10 MVA transformers. The first transformer was energised in March 2026, and the second in July 2026.

The completed upgrade has increased installed transformer capacity at the station from 10 MVA to 20 MVA. This additional 10 MVA is broadly equivalent to the electricity capacity needed to support approximately 2,500 homes, including facilitating the electrification of heating and transport.

The increased capacity will help enable customer connections, support continued economic activity and reinforce the electricity network serving the wider Shannon region.

James Finn, Network Capacity Deployment Manager, ESB Networks said:

"The completed upgrade at Drumline 110 kV Station is a practical example of how ESB Networks is accelerating capacity in areas where demand is growing.

"By doubling the installed transformer capacity at the Drumline 110 kV Station, we are strengthening the existing network and enhancing capacity to support homes, farms, businesses and industry across the Shannon area.

"Projects such as the Drumline 110 kV Station are central to our Accelerated Capacity Programme which sits firmly within our wider investment under Price Review 6, as we build a network that can support Ireland’s housing, economic and climate ambitions."

The Drumline 110 kV Station upgrade forms part of ESB Networks’ wider programme of investment under Price Review 6 (PR6), focused on strengthening and building out the electricity network across the country so it can meet increasing demand and support Ireland’s housing, economic and climate ambitions.
