Offshore Wind Energy

Delivering offshore solutions for a clean energy future

We have been involved in offshore wind generation since 2017 while we have a number of planned projects for Ireland and the UK.

We have partnered with Ørsted to develop a pipeline of offshore wind development projects off the Irish coast and complementary renewable hydrogen projects. Together, we will work together to help decarbonise the Irish electricity system and enable future renewable energy exports to Europe.

ESB and Ørsted Joint Venture wins the provisional rights to develop the Tonn Nua site

The Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment (DCEE) has provisionally awarded a Joint Venture by ESB and Ørsted, the rights to develop the Tonn Nua site off the coast of County Waterford. Under Ireland’s plan-led approach to offshore wind development, Tonn Nua was identified within the South Coast Designated Maritime Area Plan (SC-DMAP) as the exclusive site for Ireland’s second offshore wind auction (ORESS Tonn Nua).  The contract facilitates the development of a 900 MW fixed-bottom offshore wind farm for the Tonn Nua site. It also enables the successful bidder to apply for a seabed lease and grid connection for the site.

The joint press release includes all details about the announcement.

Our offshore projects providing clean energy

We are involved in two significant offshore wind farm projects that are now operational- Galloper wind farm in England and Neart na Gaoithe in Scotland.

Construction complete at our Neart na Gaoithe offshore wind farm in Scotland

Developed in partnership with EDF, Neart na Gaoithe is located 15.5km off the coast of Fife, has 54 wind turbines and is now generating up to 450 megawatts of clean, green electricity. This is enough to power around 375,000 homes, and will offset over 400,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year.

Galloper Wind Farm, England

We are part of a consortium of the Galloper project which is located 30km off the coast of Suffolk. Its 56 wind turbines produce 353MW of clean electricity and providing 60 long term jobs in the East Coast region.

Project under construction: Inch Cape, Scotland

In partnership with Red Rock Power Limited, we are developing the Inch Cape wind farm 15km from the Angus Coastline in Scotland. Once developed, it will produce 1.1GW of clean electricity which is the equivalent to powering more than 1.7 million homes.

Working in our offshore teams

Barry is one of many of our colleagues that work across our offshore teams in Ireland and the UK. He tells us about his background and the role he plays in delivering critical infrastructure for the benefit of all.

Projects in development stage in Scotland

Malin Sea, Scotland

ESB has been awarded exclusive rights to develop Malin Sea Wind, an ‘Innovation’ project, that will deliver 100MW of floating offshore wind capacity in Scottish waters. The project located between Islay and the north coast of Northern Ireland, aims to support cost reduction in the floating wind sector through the utilisation of innovative technologies and alternative routes to market.

Stoura, Scotland

Following success in the recent ScotWind seabed leasing process run by Crown Estate Scotland, ESB is now developing the Stoura Offshore Wind Farm.

Stoura is a large-scale floating windfarm project currently in development off the east coast of Shetland.

Collaborating with Parkwind to deliver clean energy power for Ireland

We are working with Parkwind on two proposed projects. Oriel, located in the Irish Sea off the coast of Dundalk with a capacity of up to 330MW. We are also investigating the feasibility of developing the Clogherhead Offshore Wind Farm, approximately 10km off the County Louth coast.
