ESB in the Community

We have a presence in every community in Ireland and believe we have a vital part to play in supporting these communities to build a brighter future by helping them to reach their full potential. As part of our Sustainability Leadership Plan, some of the actions we are undertaking include:

  • Having a Community Impact Assessment in all capital programmes.
  • Enhancing our portfolio of community focused initiatives that are supported and sponsored.
  • Developing and implementing a Stakeholder Engagement Strategy for ESB Group.

 

Our Energy for Generations Fund

Our fund sees over €1 million per year disbursed across a range of community and issues-based initiatives through a bi-annual fund to charities working in the areas of social inclusion relating to access to education as well as access to employment, and homelessness.

Case Studies

Bringing STEM to life in schools

ESB Science Blast, delivered by the RDS, encourages children’s natural curiosity by empowering them to investigate the science behind a simple question that interests them, using essential 21st Century skills. It’s a non-competitive, whole class-led STEM programme that is free to enter for primary school classes from 3rd to 6th (ROI) and Key Stage 2 (NI).

Transferring Dalton Centre at Shannonbridge to Offaly Co Co for the benefit of the local community

We transferred the Dalton Centre at Shannonbridge to Offaly County Council for local enterprise use and/or community use and ultimately for community gain. It is envisaged that the unique scale, size and potential of the centre will contribute positively to the sustainable development, as well as the future economic, social, cultural and wellbeing of the surrounding area.

Smart Meter Roll Out

ESB Networks has been tasked with the delivery of the National Smart Metering Programme, which involves upgrading all of Ireland’s electricity meters to smart meters. Part of the Government’s Climate Action Plan, smart meters will support Ireland's transition to a low carbon future by enabling the development of smart grids, and supporting the electrification of heat and transport, local renewable generation and microgeneration.

We are currently investing more than €30 million in electric vehicle charging infrastructure across the island of Ireland and Great Britain, cementing our ongoing commitment to driving electrification of transport and providing a best-in-class network for the increasing number of EV drivers.

Through Electric Ireland Superhomes, we plan to deliver more than 35,000 deep home energy upgrades by 2030 in support of the Government’s Climate Action Plan to transform our housing stock for a low carbon future.
