Launch of the Mobile Quantum Engagement Trailer
This week marked another great moment in Ireland's technological advancement with the launch of the Quantum and Answers Trailer at Trinity College Dublin's Front Square.
Quantum technology aims to secure Ireland's communications infrastructure against cyber threats through cutting-edge quantum technologies. ESB Telecoms proudly provides the vital fibre optic backbone for the IrelandQCI project.
Our Managing Director, John Regan, attended the launch of this innovative mobile engagement unit designed to bring quantum technologies to life for the Irish public. The event was also attended by key figures, including Patrick Neary, Assistant Secretary – Communications at the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications; Professor Linda Doyle, Provost of Trinity College Dublin; and Dr Deirdre Kilbane, IrelandQCI Project Lead.
What is Quantum?
IrelandQCI is a €10 million project aimed at establishing a national quantum infrastructure for Ireland as part of DIGITAL Europe's EuroQCI, an EU-wide quantum communications infrastructure programme. The goal is to secure critical infrastructure against the threat of cybersecurity attacks due to advances in quantum computing power. The EuroQCI initiative is co-funded by the Irish Government's Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications, as well as the European Commission, and includes 26 EU member states.
ESB Telecoms Vital Role in Quantum
ESB Telecoms is a key partner in the Ireland QCI project by providing the fibre infrastructure to develop a quantum key distribution (QKD) infrastructure along a central network backbone connecting Dublin to Cork via Waterford. This will integrate cutting-edge quantum technologies with existing classical fibre systems to future-proof Ireland's communications networks against cyber threats.
John Regan, Managing Director of ESB Telecoms, expressed immense pride in providing the fibre optic backbone for the IrelandQCI project.
"Quantum technology will ensure the security of our digital infrastructure and cybersecurity well into the future. Today marks another significant milestone with the launch of the Mobile Quantum Engagement Trailer, making it the perfect opportunity to bring this complex technology to life and showcase how it will future-proof Ireland's critical network infrastructure,"
The Future of Quantum in Ireland
The mobile unit aims to inspire future generations to explore careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
Following this official launch, the trailer will embark on a roadshow tour across the country, exhibiting at national and regional events, including schools, STEM events, and industry conferences. The objective is to educate stakeholders on the benefits of quantum communication technologies.
ESB Telecoms is a proud partner in the Ireland QCI consortium, recognising the importance of securing our national infrastructure against cyber threats and embracing the need to be digital and data-driven now and for future generations.
