Partnering with Ørsted to deliver the Tonn Nua offshore wind farm

In partnership with Ørsted, we were provisionally awarded the rights to develop the Tonn Nua site off the coast of County Waterford by The Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment (DCEE).

Currently in an early phase of development, once completed the site will span 306 square kilometres with expected capacity output of approximately 900MW, enough energy to power almost one million homes based on the wind prevalence in the area.

Located atop a Curryfree hill which forms part of the Sperrin Mountains; the wind farm sites in a townland known as Lisglass just 3km from Newbuildings, County Derry.

The wind farm features six turbines with a combined generating capacity of 15 MW. It can generate enough renewable electricity to power around 9,500 households a year.

Each year, the operation of Curryfree wind farm off-sets the emission of more than 41,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2). This is equivalent to removing almost 11,000 cars from the road.

Sustainable Rivers Angling Information

ESB Sustainable Rivers announce the re-opening of the Liffey and Shannon fisheries as freshwater temperatures have dropped sufficiently. The Clady & Crolly have also already opened. However, the Lee will remain closed to angling due to present elevated water temperatures. These temperatures which are presently >20oC, cause stress for both adult and juvenile fish and the effects of angling pressure will only exacerbate an already stressful environment for all wild fish species. As a result, the ESB permit sales for the Lee have ceased for the unknown duration of this fishery closure.

ESB Sustainable Rivers Strategy

We have a legal duty to manage, protect and preserve the fisheries on the rivers where we generate hydroelectric power.

Our Sustainable Rivers Strategy 2030 is a long-term framework for managing the rivers and lakes associated with hydroelectric operations in the River Shannon, Erne, Liffey, Lee and Clady/Crolly, and is aligned with our Net Zero by 2040 strategy and relevant EU regulations.

This Sustainable Rivers Strategy will improve river connectivity, support native fish populations, enhance habitats near our hydro sites and benefit local communities.

After 40 years, we end coal generation at our Moneypoint power station

We are continuing the transformation of our Moneypoint power station in Co Clare into a renewable energy hub with the end of coal generation earlier than planned, representing a significant milestone in our net zero carbon strategy.

Moneypoint will remain a key site for ESB and for the Mid-West region as the station evolves and transforms to support the Irish government to achieve its climate targets.

Partnering with DP Energy to develop Lyra wind farm

We have partnered with DP Energy to develop Lyra onshore wind farm in Co Mayo, with the potential to generate 100MW of clean energy.
Located approximately 7km of Wesport, the proposed project will generate enough energy to power more than 70,000 homes on an annual basis.

Our hydrogen power demonstration project
