- The Climate Action Fund Programme upgraded and expanded the electric vehicle (EV) charging network in Ireland and:
- Delivered over 55 charging hubs, 52 of which offer high power charging – 150kW and above
- Upgraded 100 charge points / 50 chargers to higher speeds (AC charging to DC charging)
- Replaced almost 500 existing charge points / 250 AC chargers
- The new Airside Retail Park charging hub has 4x 360kW high power chargers (HPC), with the mechanism to charge eight EVs simultaneously. Each charger can deliver up to 220km of range in as little as ten minutes.
Tuesday, October 28, 2025 – ESB today celebrated the completion of a €23 million public EV charging investment programme, co-funded by the Government’s Climate Action Fund (CAF), at the launch of a new high power charging hub at Airside Retail Park, Swords, Co. Dublin.
The milestone marks the culmination of the joint investment programme, formed in 2018 as part of Project Ireland 2040 under the National Development Plan 2018-2027, with the goal of expanding and upgrading Ireland’s public EV charging network. The project was delivered with €10m of the Climate Action Fund (CAF) with an additional €13m investment by ESB.
Darragh O'Brien TD, Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment and Minister for Transport, said: “Expanding and improving the EV charging Infrastructure has been vital to accelerating EV adoption in Ireland. Through the Climate Action Fund and our partnership with ESB, we’ve delivered a robust public charging network that supports this transition. The new hub launched today—the final under our joint initiative—shows how convenient it is to charge your EV on the go and will help more drivers go electric and cut carbon emissions.”
Speaking at the launch, Francis O’Donnell, ESB ecars Manager, said: “This high power charging hub, the final one delivered under the Climate Action Fund Programme, marks a major milestone in expanding Ireland’s public EV charging network. It reflects ESB’s commitment to a cleaner, more sustainable transport future—one that puts EV drivers first. We’ve made EV charging faster, more accessible, and more reliable. ESB remains dedicated to investing in the charging network and supporting EV drivers with the continued rollout of high power hubs across the island.”
Darren Burke of IPUT plc added: “The ESB charging hub is an important charging base for EV motorists who are local and those that are visiting. At Airside Retail Park our strategy is focused on making our buildings more sustainable, and the hub extends beyond the building itself, supporting the wider community in travelling more sustainably.”
The programme significantly improved the speed and reliability of the ESB public EV charging network across the country with the delivery of:
- Over 55 charging hubs, of which 52 hubs offer high power charging. These hubs can charge between three and eight vehicles simultaneously
- 50 standard AC (22kW) chargers upgraded to 50 fast DC chargers (50kW-100kW)
- 247 standard AC charger replacements
ESB has been developing e-mobility solutions since 2010, when it rolled out the first public charging infrastructure for EV’s across Ireland to support the introduction and demand for electric vehicles nationally. As Ireland’s largest public EV charge point operator, ESB builds, owns and operates a growing network of over 1,600 public charge points across the island of Ireland.
