- New action plan will have a sustained and positive impact on electricity infrastructure delivery, supporting housing, economic growth and climate action

ESB Networks welcomes the announcement today of the Government’s Accelerating Infrastructure Report and detailed Action Plan for accelerating infrastructure delivery. The introduction of specific, time bound actions to remove existing barriers in the delivery of infrastructure, many of which are due to be actioned in the coming few months, will have a sustained and long-term transformational impact on the delivery of vital electricity infrastructure. This comes at a critical time for ESB Networks as it embarks on its largest ever programme of investment, as detailed in the ESB Networks Price Review 6 Business Plan.
ESB Networks worked closely with the Department of Public Expenditure, Infrastructure, Public Service Reform and Digitalisation to ensure that issues relating to electricity infrastructure delivery were fully considered. Managing Director Nicholas Tarrant was a member of the Accelerating Infrastructure Taskforce, and Joe Duignan, a Senior Manager, was seconded to the Department to provide expertise to support the development of this report and action plan.
The electricity network is a critical component of national infrastructure, underpinning economic growth and supporting key policy objectives, including those contained in the new Delivering Homes, Building Communities: An Action Plan on Housing Supply and Targeting Homelessness 2025-2030, the National Planning Framework, the National Development Plan and the Climate Action Plan.
Nicholas Tarrant, ESB Networks Managing Director, said that today’s report and action plan demonstrated the value of cross industry collaboration in helping to identify and unblock the key barriers to infrastructure delivery.
“This report and action plan represent a major step forward and will bring increased momentum and focus to the delivery of key national infrastructure. ESB Networks is embarking on our largest ever programme of investment in the electricity network, reflecting the strategic importance of the electricity network in enabling social, economic and environmental transformation over the coming decades.
“By working together to implement these actions we can accelerate progress and deliver the infrastructure needed to meet the energy needs of our growing population, support a thriving economy, and achieve our climate ambitions,” he said.
Electricity infrastructure has been central to Ireland’s progress since the foundation of the State, powering homes, farms, businesses and communities, and enabling industry. By taking meaningful action to remove barriers and streamline processes, the measures contained in the report will support more efficient and coordinated infrastructure development at a time of growing demand and ensure that Ireland’s infrastructure development keeps pace with societal needs.
