Partnering with Ørsted to deliver the Tonn Nua offshore wind farm

In partnership with Ørsted, we were provisionally awarded the rights to develop the Tonn Nua site off the coast of County Waterford by The Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment (DCEE).

Currently in an early phase of development, once completed the site will span 306 square kilometres with expected capacity output of approximately 900MW, enough energy to power almost one million homes based on the wind prevalence in the area.

Grousemount Wind Farm was developed by Kerry Wind Power Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of ESB and is located in South East Kerry, between the villages of Kilgarvan, Co. Kerry and Coolea in Co Cork. The complete project was granted permission from An Bord Pleanála in Summer 2016. Grousemount Wind Farm began construction in the summer of 2017 and became operational in late 2019.

The site comprises thirty eight Siemens Gamesa turbines and has a capacity to produce 114 Megawatts (MW) of electricity which will provide enough renewable power for approximately 70,000 homes.

The development of the site was a significant undertaking involving construction of Coomataggart 110 kV Substation, which is located within the wind farm site, an underground cable connection from the substation to ESB Networks' Ballyvouskill Substation near Millstreet, Co. Cork and other associated works.
