ESB to recruit 1,000 people to accelerate its Net Zero strategy


  • Jobs include critical roles in Engineering, IT, Finance, Procurement, Customer Service, HR, Apprentices and Qualified Electricians
  • Smart, flexible working will be key to sustainable growth for the Group

Dublin, 30 May 2022

ESB is to recruit 1,000 people over the next three years to support the delivery of its ambitious Driven to Make a Difference: Net Zero by 2040 strategy.  

As part of its transformative drive to deliver the infrastructure, services and associated customer-focused solutions required to achieve net zero emissions, ESB is seeking to enhance its existing talent pool through recruitment across a range of technical and specialist skills including finance, IT, HR, engineering, customer service and qualified electricians.  

More than 300 graduates, apprentices and trainees will be recruited over the next three years as part of the recruitment drive, cementing ESB’s commitment to investing in career development and on building a future talent pipeline. 

Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications, Eamon Ryan TD, said: “This is a critical time for Ireland’s energy landscape, as we work together to achieve the targets set out in the Climate Action Plan. I welcome ESB’s announcement today, setting out a plan to actively recruit people with the range of skills needed to support its own ambition to achieve net zero by 2040. Together with the 8,000 people already employed at the organisation, these new recruits will play a key role in creating a clean energy future for us all.”

ESB will recruit across a range of positions including marine geologists, cyber specialists, project management, network planning, commercial analysts, customer service and qualified electricians with a majority of the jobs located in Ireland (see full list below).

ESB Group employs approximately 8,000 people across its diverse range of businesses including ESB Networks, Electric Ireland, ESB International, ESB Telecoms, NIE Networks, Generation and Trading, ecars and ESB’s Smart Energy Services. 

This jobs announcement follows the recent ESB Networks’ annual Apprentice Recruitment Campaign which will see up to 96 electrical apprentices start later this year, with the prestigious ESB Graduate Programme also commencing in September 2022. 

The roles will be advertised on where all interested applicants are invited to register their interest for future opportunities. 



About the positions:

ESB is seeking to fill the following roles within the next three years:

  • IT – Cyber specialists, Data Scientists and AI, Digital and Cloud specialists, project management
  • Engineering – Offshore wind, renewables, network planning, asset development, environmental, civil, electrical and mechanical and environment (marine biologists and geologists, geotechnical roles and hydrology scientists)
  • HR and Commercial – Procurement, Financial Accountants, Commercial Analysts, Trading, Human Resources and Customer Service
  • Graduates, Trainees and Apprentices – Graduate Development programme, ESB Networks apprentice programme, Trainee and Apprentice roles in Finance, IT, HR, Engineering, Commercial.
