Our Strategy

The coming decades are critical to limiting the impacts of climate change. Already, we are living through the consequences of global warming, with extreme weather events and climate-related disasters occurring with increasing frequency. As a leading energy company driven by a strong commitment to serve society, we have aligned our Driven to Make a Difference: Net Zero by 2040 strategy to deliver the urgent action required. By decarbonising our electricity system and using that clean power to replace fossil fuels in sectors such as heat and transport, the electricity system will be a key enabler of a zero-carbon energy system.

Our Strategic Focus to 2040

We are decarbonising our electricity system

We are developing and connecting renewable energy to decarbonise the electricity system by 2040. We are investing in the development of new renewable generation, including onshore and offshore wind and solar, and are significantly increasing the amount of renewable generation connected to our electricity networks.

We are building resilient infrastructure

We are investing in infrastructure to maintain reliable and secure electricity supplies, facilitating the high levels of renewable generation and to support a growing dependence on electricity across all sectors. We are developing smarter, more resilient networks to accommodate the electrification of transport and heating as well as critical energy storage capacity.

We are empowering our customers

We are empowering, enabling and supporting customers and communities to achieve net zero. This reflects our longstanding commitment to providing the latest and most innovative infrastructure, products and services to help our customers live more efficiently and sustainably.

A chart with infographical information related to ESB net zero emissions

How we measure our carbon footprint

Scope 1

Direct emissions from ESB owned or controlled assets.

Scope 2

Indirect emissions from purchased energy used in ESB operations and electricity losses on the transmission and distribution systems.

Scope 3

Indirect emissions - both upstream and downstream - in ESB's value chain from assets not owned or controlled by ESB.

How we are working to deliver a clean energy future

We are taking urgent and focused action to achieve net zero emissions by 2040, putting in place the infrastructure and services to enable our customers and society to live more sustainably. We are balancing this with our fundamental role to maintain reliable and affordable electricity for our customers, communities, and the economy.
