Implications of phasing out of fluorescent lighting for Large Energy Users

In a move that will significantly impact large energy users, the European Commission recently adopted a set of regulations under the RoHS Directive, effectively banning fluorescent lighting in the European Union.

The decision to phase out fluorescent lighting supports the United Nations Minamata Convention on Mercury which aims to “Make Mercury History,” with this move further underpinning the urgency of transitioning to mercury-free LED retrofit lamps.

Legacy lighting systems can have a significant impact on an organisation’s energy costs and carbon footprint, especially for large energy users with extensive lighting systems.

By embracing alternative, energy-efficient lighting solutions, users can expect significant reductions in their energy bills, contributing to overall cost savings as well as reducing electricity consumption and associated carbon dioxide emissions. This also provides the opportunity to demonstrate a commitment to sustainability by leading the way in adopting energy-efficient lighting technologies.

Newer LED technology can improve lighting energy efficiencies by up to 70%, while reducing maintenance requirements. With Lighting as a Service (LaaS), we design, install and maintain a custom solution, with no up-front investment required. Capital costs are offset through service fees, which reflect the customer’s reduced energy usage, delivering immediate cost savings and ongoing benefits.

New Lighting System at Shannon Airport

We recently partnered with Shannon Airport to complete a major lighting project, reducing the airport’s lighting energy consumption by two thirds.

The project, funded through ESB’s Smart Energy Services, saw the replacement of more than 4,000 indoor and outdoor lighting with ultra-modern LEDs bulbs. This will result in an annual energy saving of 1.37 million kWh reducing to 442 thousand kWh.

The project involved upgrading existing lights across the terminal building, car parks and airside to LED lights. This included emergency lighting, office, bespoke, decorative, scene setting and lighting controls, with an aim to reduce life cycle running and maintenance costs.
